Implementing Stock Icon Images in Your Development Environment
Choosing the right collection of stock icons was not quick or easy. But you've made the choice, and have purchased a perfect set to use in your project. Now when you bought the icons, what are you going to do with them? Do you know what file format should be used where, and what resolution, color depth or image style to use in your development environment for your application?
There are several common questions asked by most developers. Where should I use 32-bit icons with alpha-channel, and why choose them over traditional 256-color images? What development environments support translucent graphics, and what file formats should be used there? Finally, which versions of stock icons to use for the many Windows control elements? Let's clear these questions one by one.
Choosing 32-bit icons over their 8-bit versions is natural. 32-bit icons feature an extra layer defining a translucency mask. This layer is called alpha channel. Thanks to that alpha channel, icons with 32-bit color depth can integrate nicely with backgrounds of any color and complexity, showing smooth edges and looking great even if your background has a busy color, gradient, or shows an image or pattern. In addition, the alpha channel can make shadows and reflections appear translucent, making them look natural and overall rendering extremely pleasing.
So, 32-bit icons are the perfect type to use. The real question is if you will be able to use them in your project. In reality, 32-bit graphics can be used in most situations - and cannot be used in others. If you're designing a Web site, the chances are that your target audience already has compatible Web browsers that can display 32-bit graphics with full alpha-channel support. Exceptions are far and between, and include Internet Explorer 6 and earlier versions, ancient builds of Mozilla, and a few resource-limited mobile platforms (although most mobile browsers can still show 32-bit icons).
For Web use, you should use 32-bit icons in PNG format wherever possible. If maintaining support for legacy browsers is essential, you can resort to 24-bit PNG icons, converting the original 32-bit images with an icon editor such as IconLover. 8-bit GIF files can be used for building light Web sites to be displayed on the slowest mobile browsers. Note that GIF files don't have a full alpha-channel support; instead, they offer a single-bit transparency mask. Again, you can convert your 8-bit icons from 32-bit originals with IconLover, or use the GIF versions of icons supplied with your icon set. The GIF icons provided with your set will look fine on any background, but you can produce your own versions if you have a bright, colourful background and want your images blend with it smoothly.
Windows applications can typically only use a single type of file depending on what exactly you're going to use it for. For example, ICO files can be used for application icons. ICO files include the same image (or, sometimes, different images) in various sizes and color depths within a single file. The system will automatically pick the proper size and color depth depending on the user's display settings and the location of the icon. It's best to pack all standard sizes and color resolutions in an ICO file. Our stock icons already include all standard resolutions and color depths stored in the ICO files; if you want to build your own ICO, you can use IconLover.
There are dozens of other things we'd love to tell you about integrating your newly purchased graphics. You can access an extended version of this article detailing the many Windows controls and development environments such as Java, C#, .NET and Visual Studio, at http://www.aha-soft.com/faq/integrating-icons-development-environments.htm. Standard Graphics for iPhone iPad and iPod the Different Sizes - Produce Advance Graphical Images
Application developers must use a particular set of icons when developing apps for all generation of Apple iPhone and iPod devices. They should use the icons that meet image creation guidelines and Apple's stringent custom icon. One requires a launch image and an application icon as a bare minimum. Well, Apple advocates that apps produce quite a few additional images. Apps that can create specific file types such as video clips, document and music will require image to depict their supported file formats. Many apps also need a share of image to illustrate their navigation bars and toolbars. As a common rule, Apple has strict necessity on how to apply these icons so that every application running on the iPad or iPod platform conforms to common visual guidelines. Specifications make sure that your application looks in line with applications provided by Apple and other developers. The high definition resolutions allow displaying images with stunning dimension and depths.
The Apple's new high density Retina packs more of dots in the small area than it was imaginable some years before. The high definition displays also allow showing highest definition of graphics to display the crisp images with some stunning dimension. As such, the Retina displays may naturally need the higher resolution of icons being employed in the navigation bars, tab bars and toolbars. The texture reach, realistic images and highly detailed, with the small elements as well as carvings can produce most pleasing effect of the 3dimensionality or depth. In order, to display good graphics on the Retina displays, the developers require the icons in the resolutions of 60 x 60 pixels. Whereas, generally, apps will use the graphics in any of the reasonable size and resolution, and there are many common sizes of the icons conform in order for the iOS to display them rightly in the navigation bars, tab bars and toolbars.
