The principles of web layouts
When you create a Web design, one of the most forgotten points of the development is the layout. Now, a lot of people are figuring out how to do a layout (which techniques to use), but the basics of Web layout are commonly completely ignored.
The use of space
Use the whole space, but don't be too strict in your use. That means, use scaleable layout sections on your Web site, so that they can be scaled to match the browser window.
Don't forget about the screen resolution. While the most computer users have moved away from 640x480 resolution, remember it when you're developing a layout. Having customers leave because all that is visible is a title on their screen is not good customer service.
Use color to separate different blocks. If you need a page of a specific width, you should center it on the browser screen and make the background color of the page a different color. This will make your page appear to scale for various browsers; bigger browsers will simply contain more background color, while smaller browsers will contain less or none showing.
The image side
Organize your graphics. One of the most typical newbie layout mistakes is to put images into a side without considering your layout scheme. If you simply use an img tag and then write text to follow it, you'll have the image and then one line of text to the right of it. Applying the alignment will help incorporate the images into layout.
Balance the images and text on a page. It's really easy to get carried away with all those graphics and animations, but they can turn you page into a very hard to read one. When you're considering your layout, don't forget that graphics are a major part of the layout, not just afterthoughts.
Text Width
Think carefully about text width. This is often called the "scan length", and means to the number of words that are are placed on one line. Most people can comfortably read about 7 or 11 words on a line. If the lines are longer then that the text becomes hard to read, shorter than that and it's uneven and annoying. When designing your layouts be certain that the main text is displayed in a comfortably readable width.
Centering text is not recommended. One of the first layout techniques that a new designer learns is the center tag, and they center all the content on their sites. However, centering is very hard to do good and it's often hard to read.
