Web design basics
Graphics
1. Keep it small, about 10-12KB for one image. Yes, considering the source, the number of broadband users is growing. However, slow sites are still very annoying, even if you have a T1. And giant images are a primary reason of slow pages. It's simple to optimize your graphics.
2. Always use images that match the context. Only because you have an adorable photo of your cat doesn't mean you should place it on your Web site about Web Design. The main exception I would make to this is for "design" graphics. These are photos or icons that help make up the visual appearance of your site, and are not intended to illustrate the content.
3. Never use graphics that flash or flip or glitter or rotate or do anything on your site. Or insert them niggardly. Recent researches demonstrate that animated graphics are disturbing and irritating to people. Actually, in one study group I watched the users physically hide animations so that they would be able to read the rest of the page.
Layout
4. Use standard layouts. I've been over some pages that use numerous frames on one page. the other site used a layout which made users scroll to the right to see all the content of the page (but they never had to scroll down). These layouts may be innovative, and you will certainly find them interesting to build, but they will drive your readers crazy. The reason for the 3-column layout being so common on Web sites and newspapers is because it is easy to read. You might consider it to be boring, however, you'll keep more readers if you stick with something intuitive that they can understand.
5. Treat your graphics as rightful parts in your layouts. Graphics can be something more than only images when you apply them as actual parts in your layouts. An extreme example is the word wrap done around an image, but any graphic you have on your page is a layout element and has to be treated as one.
