The basics of web layouts
When you create a Web design, one of the many forgotten aspects of the development is the layout. Now, many people are figuring out how to create a layout (CSS, tables, frames, etc.), but the principles of Web layout are commonly completely forgotten.
Space and Whitespace
Use the whole space, but don't be too strict in your use. In other words, use relative layout parts on your Web site, so that they can be scaled to match the browser size.
Remember about the resolution. While the most computer users have switched from 640x480 resolution, keep that in mind when you're designing. Having customers leave because all that is visible is a title on their monitor is poor customer service.
Apply color to separate different blocks. If you need a page that's a specific width, why not center it on the browser screen and make the background color of the page a different color. This will help the page seam to scale for various browsers; bigger browsers will simply contain more background color, while smaller browsers will have less or none showing.
The image side
Align your graphics. The most typical newbie layout mistakes is to slap graphics into a side willy-nilly without thought to layout. If you simply apply an img tag and then put some text to explain it, you'll get the picture and a line of text to follow at the right of it. Applying the alignment will help make your images part of the layout.
Balance the images and text on a page. It's really easy to get carried away with lots of graphics and animations, but they can turn you page into a very hard to read one. When you're considering your layout, remember that images are a major part of the design, not just afterthoughts.
Text Alignment
Put in some thought about text width. This is often named the "scan length", and refers to the number of words that are are displayed on one line. In general users can effortlessly read about 7 or 11 words on a line. If the lines are longer then that the text becomes hard to read, shorter than that and it's uneven and annoying. When designing your layouts make sure that the main text is displayed in a comfortably readable width.
Centering paragraphs is inadvisable. One of the first layout techniques that a new designer learns is the center tag, and they center all the content on their sites. But centering is very hard to do good and it's often hard to read.
