The Web is Not Print
A lot of Web designers come to the Web already having a print experience. Either they were print artists, or they are just used to the manage that a print world gives. When you print something, it turns out to be permanent and stable. That does not happen with Web.
The problem is, that it's easy to forget. When you build your Web page and have a trial run in your browser, you produce it looking just the way you like it to look. However, then you test it in another browser, and it looks different. And if you move to a different OS, it will look differently once more.
Being a designer, you'll need to work with users. You will not be doing them and yourself a favor if you don't understand the difference between print and the Web. Especially if you bring your portfolio as print outs. This is a common problem, where the customer expects the printout to represent exactly what the page will look like.
What To Do
Working with Customers
- Printed Pages as a Portfolio
It is very important to create a portfolio, but remember that the Web is different from print, and including a printed page is not a good representation of your Web site development talents.
- Defining Goals
Be up-front with your clients. If they require their site to have very specific layout, font, and images, make sure you explain the faults of it like download speed and editing prior to simply building them a totally graphical site.
- Know what the client uses
If you're a large Firefox or Mac addict, and your customer only uses Internet Explorer for Windows, you need to keep this in mind in your project. Your page could look dramatically different to them.
Design Tips
- Know your audience
Get familiar with the details of the users of the page you're building. If they are geeks, they probably browse in Unix on a 21 inch monitor. Or if they are more old-fashioned they might own a 12 inch monitor running Internet Explorer 3. If you create a page that suits your users, your customer won't come complaining afterwards.
- Run the tests
Test your ideas in every browser and OS combination that you can get your hands on. Emulators work if you have no other options, however there is no replacement for hands on experience.
- Don't forget resolution
Software and OS are important, but if your users and clients are working on a smaller monitor than you design on, they could be disappointed
