Web design essentials
Images
1. Keep it small, about 10-12KB per picture. Yes, depending on the source, the percent of cable users is growing. However, slow pages are still really annoying, even if you're on a T1. And giant graphics are a first cause of slow pages. It's easy to optimize your graphics.
2. Be sure ot use images that match the content. Only because you have an adorable picture of your dog doesn't mean you should place it on your page about Web Design. The only exception you would make to this is for "design" graphics. These are photos or graphics that help make up the design of the site, and are not intended to illustrate the subject.
3. Do not insert graphics that blink or move or glitter or rotate or are in any way inconstant on your site. Or insert them niggardly. Numerous researches indicate that flashing graphics are distracting and annoying to users. Actually, in one focus group I watched the users physically cover up flashing graphics so that they could read the other content on the page.
Layout
4. Use standard layouts. I've been over some pages that use 6 or 8 frames on one page. the other site had a layout which made users scroll horizontally to read everything on the page (but you never scrolled down). These layouts may be cute, and you will certainly think they are fun to build, but they will make your users nuts. The reason for the 3-column layout being so common on Web pages and press is because it is easy to read. You certainly think it's boring, but you'll have more audience if you stick with something simple that they can understand.
5. Use your images as rightful parts in the layouts. Graphics can be more than just images when you apply them as actual parts in your layouts. An easy example is the word wrap done around a graphic, but any image you have on your page is a layout element and should be treated as one.
