A great site is a usable one
In web design, when you think about flow we mostly mean "task flows" and "flow charts" but there's another type of flow that we should keep in mind. It's that impression of total absorption when you're engaged in something you like to do without being disrupted by anxiety or boredom caused by steps that are misdirecting, repetitive or overly taxing.
Flow, as a mind condition, was primarily proposed by psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi and is described by a incorrect sense of time, a low level of self-consciousness, and total engagement in the process at hand. Program developers might experience it when they're working on their code, gamers might experience it when running Quake III, Christopher Cross felt it when he started his trip. For designers, it's just the feeling we hope to achieve in the users of our site.
How do we design sites that inspire that feeling? First, it starts with a page that solves a serious problem and is complicated enough to require a certain degree of learning by people who use it. The goal should not certainly be to create a simple page. The goal should be to create a site that feels painless to use no matter how complicated it actually is. But wait, you might be thinking, hasn't there been a simplicity trend in the design field over the last few years? Yes, but there's a learning curve for all the sites that want to sort out a complex problem. You shouldn't confuse simplicity with a desire to avoid excessive complexity.
The trick to make the complex appear painless is to consider flow in your structure. By designing a page that is smooth and intuitive and engages flow, you make people get up-to-speed in a shorter time, reduce the chance that current users get bored your site and switch to a different one and produce users that promote your page to their friends. That way you will get more users, growing activity, and greater awareness of your site.
The primary point in creating for flow is to set clear goals for the users. It's important to develop both an overarching goal and smaller, incremental goals. Goals help people understand what is their final destination and each step they have to take to get there.
