A great site is a usable one
With web design, when we think of flow we usually mean "task flows" or "flow charts" but there's another kind of flow that you have to keep in mind. It's that impression of total absorption when you're doing stuff you love to do and are not disrupted by anxiety or boredom caused by steps that are confusing, too long or overly taxing.
Flow, as a mental state, was primarily proposed by psychology professor Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi and is described by a incorrect sense of time, a deficiency of self-consciousness, and complete engagement in the process at hand. Software engineers often experience it when they're working on their code, gamers do experience it when playing Quake III, Christopher Cross felt it when he started his trip. For Web designers, it's exactly the feeling we hope to achieve in the users of our site.
How can we create sites that inspire that feeling? Well, it starts with a page that sorts out a serious problem and is complicated enough to ask for a certain amount of learning by people who use it. The goal should not certainly be to develop a simple page. The goal should be to create a site that feels intuitive to navigate no matter how complicated it actually is. However, you might be thinking, hasn't there been a simplicity movement in web design in the last few years? Yes, but there's a learning curve for all the sites that seeks to solve a complex problem. You shouldn't mix simplicity with a desire to avoid excessive complexity.
The way to make the complicated appear friendly is to design with flow in mind. By developing a page that is fluid and intuitive and engages flow, you make people get familiar with it in a shorter time, lower the chance that current users leave your site and switch to a different one and produce users that promote your site to other people. That way you will get more users, growing activity, and greater awareness of your site.
The first point in creating for flow is to determine certain goals for your users. It's vital to develop both a global goal as well as smaller, staged goals. Goals help users understand what is their final destination and each step they'll take to arrive there.
